     There are many reasons that go beyond materialism. Splendor, pomp and show, showing off, etc are all far away for those reasons. One of those reasons is internal attachment of one's heart, which makes a person happy. Attachment only comes from someone whom a person trusts. In today's materialism, many humans believe in other humans, even though there are no humans worth it in this world. And connect with their hearts. Maybe their reason would have been different.
